Our multi-age third and fourth graders collaborate for learning while building on the identified skills and concepts outlined in the Next Generation Learning Standards.
Both Third Fourth Graders continue to develop and master literacy skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. They read a range of literature and informational text and use their skills to infer ideas, find themes within and across texts, use historical context to comprehend elements of narratives such as descriptive language, conflict, and plot, and compare and contrast sources to deepen their understanding of events and scientific discoveries.
OurTthird Graders take the New York State tests in English Language Arts and Mathematics. We use these results to improve our curriculum and instruction approaches. These tests occur in the spring of each year.
Our Third Graders hone their math skills by mastering mutliplication tables, using information to solve problems, and understanding the relationship between multiplication and addition AND multiplication and division.
In mathematics, Fourth Graders focus on three main areas: multi-digit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends; fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers; and analyzing and classifying geometric shapes based on their properties, (e.g. parallel sides, perpendicular sides, angle measurements, etc.).
Fourth Graders become experts on New York State as they learn the history, geography, economics, and government of our state. They use both historical fiction and primary sources to understand major historical events and changes from Colonial times to current day.
Fourth Graders study science through inquiry-based experiments designed to support understanding of Energy, Waves, Earth Systems, and how organisms perceive and remember information.
